Day 21 Yalung base to high camp

No more snow has fallen, so we decide to move up to the Ramdung high camp. After breakfast Julian, Al, Pasang and I pack up and head north west over the rock ridge towards Ramdung, while the others set off to climb Yalung Ri. Sadly they get cloudy weather as soon as they reach the top and are deprived of the fine views.

It's not far to the high camp, in a rock-strewn basin adjacent to a frozen glacial lake. However, there has been major landslides between the camp and the ridge we are on and the descent is difficult and dangerous, particularly for the porters. There's no point in fixing ropes, we just have to take it carefully.

The camping place looks horrible from above - in fact it doesn't look like a camping place at all, more like a boulder field with rock fall and flood danger. Also, the route for tomorrow runs at the top of a steep scree below loose crags, and looks like suicide. When we reach the water's edge, we find some reasonable camping spots and settle in. From here, it is clear that there isn't really much danger from rockfall. However, a glacier plunges directly into the lake on the far side, and any serac fall could cause a wave to wash over the camp.

Sit around in the afternoon sun and take the opportunity to dry our sleeping bags and other kit which got damp from the snow. Retire after a generous dal bhaat with some reservations about tomorrow's route. Still, that's for another day.
