Expedition report
We will be adding a detailed report on the trip soon. The information below was written
before departure, but is an accurate description of what we did.
After flying to Constable Point we will transfer to Scoresbysund village
(Ittoqqortoormiit), where we will meet the local Greenlandish hunters. We
will then continue with them by dogsled along the sea-ice of the east coast
for a further two days. This will take us into the heart of the Liverpool Land
mountains, where we will establish a glacier camp. The mountains here are
very alpine, rising 2000m straight from sea-level.
At the end of winter Liverpool Land has long, often clear days, with stable
sea-ice, and good powder snow on north-facing slopes and stable spring snow
on south-facing slopes. The temperatures are likely to be -20°C to -10°C and
the days are almost 24 hours long, which means that we should get a lot of
skiing done. The polar high is usually established by the end of winter, so
the weather is often very good.
We aim to make ski ascents and descents of the surrounding mountains, moving
camp to new areas using pulks. At the end of the expedition we shall return
to Scoresbysund either on ski or by dogsled.
The expedition will be filmed using DV and the footage submitted to Creative
Touch films for production and broadcast. In addition we will make a film
for next year's Kendal Mountain Film Festival and include a short version on this website.
